A new pair of handmade Kolhapuri chappals is stiff for the first few days, and many people get a shoe-bite in one of two places: the toe loop, or just below the main strap. This is normal. The fix is to oil the leather, let it soak overnight, warm it in the sun, and keep wearing the pair. By the end of the first week it usually starts to soften and take the shape of your foot. If one spot keeps biting after that, a cobbler can hammer that part of the leather flat so it settles.
Why a new Kolhapuri feels stiff
A Kolhapuri is cut, stitched and braided by hand from thick vegetable-tanned leather. Vegetable tanning uses plant extracts instead of chemicals, and it produces leather that starts firm. Factory sandals are often softened before they leave the line. A handmade pair is not. It arrives firm and finishes shaping on your foot.
That is the point of it. Oil, warmth and your body weight soften the leather, and it stretches where your foot presses hardest. After the first week the pair is no longer shaped like the last it was made on. It is shaped like your foot.
Where the bite happens
On almost every new pair, shoe-bite shows up in two places:
- The toe loop, the leather strap that holds the big toe. It is firm on a new pair and rubs where it meets the skin.
- Below the main strap, the wide band across the top of the foot, where its edge rubs as you walk.
Both are edges of firm leather meeting skin, and both soften with oil and wear. The first three to five wears are the hardest. After that, the leather starts to give.
What to do in the first week
1. Oil the leather. Castor oil is the traditional choice, and coconut oil works too. Dab a thin coat onto the straps and footbed with a cotton cloth, working extra into the toe loop and the underside of the main strap. Do not oil the underside of the sole, and do not overdo it: too much oil makes the chappal slippery.
2. Let it soak overnight. Leave the pair overnight so the oil soaks into the leather instead of sitting on the surface.
3. Warm it in the sun the next day. About an hour of sun is enough. Warmth softens the oiled leather, but leaving it out all day dries the leather and can crack it.
4. Wear it, starting at home. For the first few days, wear the pair around the house for short stretches, with socks if you like. Your body weight presses the leather into your foot's shape, and it stretches wherever your foot presses hardest. If a spot is rubbing, cover it with a plaster or paper tape while the pair wears in.
5. If one spot keeps biting, take it to a cobbler. Ask them to hammer the biting edge. Tapping the leather flattens and settles that part so it stops cutting into the skin. Any local cobbler familiar with leather chappals can do this.
