Kolhapuri chappal eyes foreign shores, set for a makeover; Paris designer roped in for training

Aiming to revive the legacy of the iconic Kolhapuri chappal, the Maharashtra State Khadi and Village Industries (MSKVI) Board is all set to give it an international makeover. The board has roped in Paris-based design professor and footwear designer Neona Skane to conduct workshops and train local artisans and chappal-makers. The board is also taking the help of current and former businessmen and experts from other footwear giants such as Bata to conduct these workshops. Behind a large bungalow in the Jawahar Nagar area in Kolhapur town in eastern Maharashtra lies a small plot of land, measuring 85x160 yards. Kolhapur: The cooperative department has issued a notice to 11 directors of the Kolhapur District Central Cooperative bank (KDCC) asking them why the department should not remove them from their posts.The notices were issued following the recent decision of the state government barring directors from contesting cooperative elections if the institution had earlier been dissolved because of irregularities. The KDCC's board of directors was dissolved in 2007-08 for irregular distribution of loans.Rajendrakumar Darade, divisional joint registrar of the cooperative department, issued the notice.
