Sandals shown at Prada’s June 2025 men’s presentation drew attention for closely resembling Kolhapuri chappals without initial attribution. Prada later acknowledged the inspiration and, in December 2025, signed an agreement with Maharashtra’s LIDCOM and Karnataka’s LIDKAR for a limited artisan-made project. The episode renewed global discussion about credit, GI protection and fair benefit for craftspeople.

Ask where the pair was made and who made it. Look for hand-cut components, visible hand stitching and the small, natural differences expected from craft—not identical factory finishing. Confirm the materials and construction in the product description. Where a recognised certification or QR code is offered, verify it rather than relying on packaging alone.

These phrases generally describe footwear that borrows the silhouette or decorative language of a Kolhapuri but may be made outside the GI region, from different materials or with factory production.

The price reflects natural leather, several hours of skilled handwork, small-batch production and the ability to repair the pair over time. Very low prices can signal synthetic materials, glued construction or machine stitching—but price alone is not proof of authenticity.

They can be very comfortable once broken in. A traditional pair feels firmer than foam-cushioned footwear because the sole is layered leather. With wear, the leather softens and gradually takes the shape of your foot.

Fresh vegetable-tanned leather can rub at the toe loop or strap before it softens. Begin with short indoor wears, keep your feet dry and allow the pair to rest between wears. Do not force prolonged use through painful rubbing.

Fit check: Firm leather is normal; sharp pressure, toes overhanging the sole or a heel sitting off the back may indicate the wrong size.

Wear it for short periods so body heat and movement begin shaping the leather. If the product’s care guidance permits oiling, apply a very thin, even coat with a cotton cloth, let it absorb and rest the pair overnight. Always patch-test first because oil can darken leather.

First remove dust and make sure the pair is fully dry. Apply a small amount of oil evenly with a cotton cloth, including the sole if it is all leather. Use a dry, soft cotton cloth and a soft brush for loose dirt. Let mud dry before gently brushing or scraping it from the sole. Avoid soaking, strong detergent and washing machines.

It is best to avoid heavy rain. Traditional leather is not waterproof, and repeated soaking can stiffen it, distort the sole or encourage fungus. If your pair gets wet, remove surface dirt and let it dry naturally in an airy place away from direct heat. Condition only after it is completely dry.

Clean and dry them completely. Wrap the pair in plain paper, place it in a breathable cotton bag and store it somewhere dry with airflow—never sealed while damp. Inspect it occasionally during long storage.

Yes. Tan, brown or black Kolhapuris work well with straight jeans or chinos and a shirt, tee or kurta. An ankle-length hem or small cuff keeps the silhouette visible.

Absolutely. Kolhapuris pair naturally with kurta-pyjama, dhoti, sherwani and festive separates. For weddings, choose a more detailed Shahu or Senapati-style pair, and break it in before the event.
